BOOOM! My world of technology has just been hit by some huge news! I cannot even describe to you, my dear readers, how excited I am. For years, we have watched Samsung and other manufacturers fold phones in every possible way, while Apple quietly sat on the sidelines. Now it has finally entered the game.
The iPhone Duo is Apple’s first foldable iPhone, starts at $1,999, pre-orders begin October 16, and sales start October 23. When open, it has a 7.6-inch display, when closed it uses a 5.4-inch outer display, and inside it runs on the new A20 Pro chip. Apple’s official announcement also confirms storage options ranging from 256GB to 2TB.
I expected Apple to make a foldable at some point. What I did not expect was for it to immediately make a $3,199 iPhone.
Yes, you read that correctly.
First, let’s quickly go through the main features, and then we can take a closer look at them:
- The 7.6-inch inner display turns the Duo into a small tablet when you open it.
- A20 Pro handles performance and AI features.
- Two batteries, one in each half, work as a single system.
- 48MP cameras remain in the same class as Pro iPhone models.
- The folding hinge and flexible display will be the biggest durability test for the first generation.
Let’s open the iPhone Duo first

When closed, the iPhone Duo uses a 5.4-inch Super Retina XDR display. Apple says that screen provides about 90% of the display area of the iPhone 18 Pro, so the device remains fairly compact when closed.
Open it and you get a 7.6-inch foldable Super Retina XDR display. Both support ProMotion, while the inner display has a nano-texture layer to reduce glare. Apple’s iPhone Duo specifications also list Always-On support.
Seven and a half inches is already enough space for me to read a longer article or use two apps without feeling like I am squeezing everything onto a small screen. When I am done, I fold it and put it back in my pocket.
Apple has also adapted iOS 27.1 for the Duo. Apps can use the larger inner display, while content moves between the outer and inner displays when you open the device.
$1,999 is just the beginning, believe it or not!

The base iPhone Duo with 256GB costs $1,999.
Then the real party starts:
| Storage | iPhone Duo price in the U.S. |
| 256GB | $1,999 |
| 512GB | $2,199 |
| 1TB | $2,599 |
| 2TB | $3,199 |
Apple currently lists all four prices in its iPhone Duo purchase configurator.
I have a hard time reading $3,199 for a phone without checking the number one more time. That is the price of a good laptop and a phone combined.
A comparison with the main competitors shows how high Apple has set the starting price.
| Foldable | Starting price in the U.S. |
| Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 | $1,899.99 |
| Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold | $1,899 |
| Apple iPhone Duo | $1,999 |
Samsung currently lists the Galaxy Z Fold8 at $1,899.99, while Google lists the Pixel 11 Pro Fold at a regular price of $1,899.
Will the A20 Pro and two batteries manage to justify the price?

The Duo uses the A20 Pro, the same new processor tier Apple uses for its most powerful phones this year.
Apple lists six CPU cores and seven GPU cores. The new chip also has two 16-core Neural Engine blocks and is manufactured on a 2nm process. According to Apple’s figures, the CPU is up to 20% faster than the A19 Pro, while memory bandwidth has increased by 50%.
Apple placed one battery in each half of the phone. The system uses them as a single unit, which makes sense because the foldable design distributes space very differently from a traditional iPhone.
The claimed figures are:
- up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display
• up to 44 hours when using the outer display
• up to 24 hours of typical mixed use
Charging to 50% takes about 20 minutes with a compatible wired adapter.
The cameras are serious as well. The Duo has a 48MP Dual Fusion system, with a 48MP main camera and a 48MP Ultra Wide camera. The outer display can serve as a preview for the person you are photographing, which is one of the few foldable features I can immediately imagine actually using.
Would I pay $1,999 for it?
Now we get to the difficult part.
I want to try it. Of course I do.
Someone who has spent years writing about devices can hardly look at the first foldable iPhone and calmly move on as if nothing happened.
But $1,999 is a serious amount of money. And $3,199 for the 2TB model enters the part of the price list where I start thinking about everything else I could buy for the same amount.
Pre-orders begin October 16 at 5 a.m. PT, and the iPhone Duo goes on sale October 23 in the U.S. and more than 70 other markets. Apple will offer it in Star White and Night Sky. Apple has already confirmed both dates.
Until then, I have a few days to explain to myself why I need a $1,999 phone at all.
That is going to be a difficult conversation.
